MRS. Garrett

Dear Mr. Garrett,

I am doing it.

Thank you for being so patient as I try and figure out this new chapter in my life. I am pushing, stretching myself in a way I never have before. The outside of my comfort zone has now become the inside. The seemingly "impossible" situations have now become the typical.  My mind/body runs a bajillion miles an hour--> always. I am learning and loving in a way I never have before. I was hired to teach students, but I believe they are the ones teaching me:

*Don't Judge, LOVE. Some of my students come to my every day class broken. The sadness and heartache some endure is unbelievable.  I make many phone calls a week to parents/guardians-->some for exciting reasons and some...well, I need more insight to help their kids succeed. Twice, I have ended a call and nearly sobbed. To see the resiliency of a student through horrific events or the excitement (and sometimes disbelief) that a parent has when you tell them their child is excelling is awe-inspiring. With 300 students, it is so easy to label or judge--and oh how wrong we can be. (DON'T DO IT!) Some of my happiest moments involved seeing a student who does not try because they believe/were labeled as "not smart" or they "can not do something,"realize that they can; seeing them achieve one of the highest scores in the class or hearing them shout across the classroom, "Mrs. Garrett, I am smart!" Simple experiences, powerful truth.

*Be kind to yourself! Some days I come home, ecstatic. Other days, emotionally exhausted.  One of those harder days, I came home worried about a couple of my students. I was beating myself up over how I could better reach them; what could I do to be a better teacher? I felt very discouraged trying to learn the swing of this first-year teacher thing, the hard way. Anyway, I started grading some of their projects when I stumbled across a note on the bottom of an assignment (depicted above ^^). Made me want to cry. Seeing that made every long night, and early morning I have dedicated on their behalf--> worth it. That note meant more to me than that student will ever know. It was a tender mercy from above. Great reminder: Be kind to yourself!

*Be You. It is easy to stick to the conventional ways of doing things BUT DON'T let conformity detract from who you are. Be you. Half the time my students probably think I am crazy but I am at my best and feel alive, when I am M-E! i.e. Using creativity to learn. Last week, I did a simulation on the Underground Railroad. I turned off the lights (except for my headlamp), made the students hide under their desks, played a track of ferocious dogs barking, and read a short poem/diary of a runaway slave. As I played a spiritual slave song, we "whispered" about the lives of slaves during the civil war. It was a riot!

*There's Time for Bathroom Breaks. yeah, Friday was one of those days where I had to go to the bathroom at 9:30am and did not have a chance to go until 4:00pm. (no bueno) But I discovered: I can talk on the phone, give a student a quiz, eat my lunch, and solve a first-degree offense all at once. I am usually juggling four or five balls at once and I drop the ball labeled, "ME." I have learned (and relearned) that I need to take care of myself, or I won't be able to take care of others.

*Laugh. Don't you love those moments where you catch yourself laughing, truly laughing--the deep, boisterous belly kind of laugh? Let those moments happen.

*P.s. Guess what, Mr. Garrett? I can be pretty stern, too. I think it surprised me more than my students.

Thank you, Love. Thank you for being patient with me. Thank you for doing the laundry and cooking delicious dinners last week. (For the others, Cafe Rio Tortilla Soup, we love you!) My heart feels it will burst every time I leave you, knowing you are the greatest thing to ever happen to me. I could not do this without your support. I am the luckiest.

Love, Mrs. Garrett

8 Life Lessons this Week

I am sorry I have not blogged recently--my heart is full. I have learned a lot from this week and I want to share.

1* Life is beautiful and sacred. My sister-in-law just had her second little angel yesterday. I could not be more ecstatic. she is absolutely perfect. We are dying to meet her. Marisa is the sweetest of mothers and it has been so fun to watch their little family grow! Isn't it amazing God gives us the ability to bring children into this world?! Being a wife and mother is her top priority; she truly exemplifies the sacredness and joy that is found in motherhood. It makes me even more excited to be a mother oneday. An iPhone pic they sent us yesterday:

2* I feel like the older I get, the faster time goes. Time is money (B. Franklin) Time can often get the best of us and before we know it, we are in a different place doing things we never thought we would be doing. I was reminded how precious time is on Tuesday, when my application for graduation was approved. I am graduating from BYU. I walk in 3 weeks. (WHAT?!) where did the time go? I still remember running around like hooligans my freshmen year--sleeping little, laughing often, and loving the first years of growing independence. I was so young but so ready to grow. Two days ago, many of us from our freshmen clan reunited for the first time--after years spent apart. My time at BYU is just about done--I cannot believe it! Yes, what I thought would last eternity has ended a new chapter awaits me. Time will not wait for us--don't procrastinate what you can do today!

3*kind words go along way. Speak kind words. I can't count how many times a simple comment or compliment has been a highlight of an entire day (thank you). Saying and receiving kindness brings joy.

4* "Don't let your search for a happy ending get in the way of living a happy life." Or as Oprah says, "You can have it all, just not all at once." Enjoy the chapter of life you are in now! It is so easy to look ahead and plan for everything we ever want to do in life. We are told to seize the day--not seize everything in your life all at once-->that would be utter chaos. Oftentimes, I have to remind myself that I cannot sing all verses of my song at once. Life is for living and experiencing--what good would it do if it all happened at once? be patient. Live in the moments. Let the beauty of life envelope you every once in awhile.

5* "The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance." (Alan Watts) Change can be hard but it can also be so great--embrace it. If I had to summarize the month of August into one word: Change. (our calendar is covered in ink for August!) My family is moving from our home, Chels and I are graduating, I am starting a new job that partway excites me but also terrifies me!!!!

6* "Don't be held down by what you cannot control." Forgive, and you will be set free. I am not one to get easily upset or angered. but I am not perfect. there is one thing that can really test my patience and that is when someone deeply hurts a loved one of mine. At these times, I try to foster extra love and charity in my heart because not forgiving is like putting poison in your veins-it only hurts you. I hate when these feelings arise. oftentimes the only thing we can change about hurtful situations is our own attitudes.  Forgiveness is not easy to do (and for some it takes time) but it is necessary to live a life filled with happiness.

"A loving heart is the beginning of all knowledge."-Carlyle

7* "Avoid at all cost, any pessimistic, negative, or criticizing thoughts. If you cannot cut them out, they will do you harm." Give yourself a break! I saw this little message (below) on Instagram this week and loved it. Who isn't hard on themselves once in awhile? Or maybe it is just me but I can definitely be my own bully. a lot of self harm comes from comparing ourselves to others. for me, I am very hard on myself and it is easy to point out everything that is "wrong" or needs to be better but when we focus more on the things we have to be grateful for, we are promising ourselves a better life.

8* Families can be together forever. one of our dear family friends from over a decade ago ( in Colorado) just lost their son and brother to a motorcycle accident last night. My heart has been sick thinking about this. Whether you are welcoming a new member to a family as my sister-in-law did or bearing the burden of witnessing a loved one leave, I have a strong testimony that families can be together forever. I am so grateful for mine and I want to tell them I love them as much as I can. (Look at the post above for the funeral.)

sorry for this random post of life lesson-randomness--these are things I learned or was reminded of this week.

Life is so very lovely. Life is also so very hard. but life is always worth living. Keeps your heads up brave ones.

Cheers to enjoying the journey and learning along the way!
